In Egyptian hieroglyphics, the bee (encoded as L2 in Gardiner's Sign List) was a highly significant symbol representing Lower Egypt, royalty, and divinity often appearing in the title "He of the Sedge and the Bee" (nswt-bjtj) for the Pharaoh. Appearing as early as 2900 BCE, the sign, pronounced bjt or bit, also represented "honey" and conveyed concepts of economic power, industry, and immortality.
