It is not difficult to identify drone brood. The drone cocoons literally "stand out" above the worker brood. The worker capped brood is flat, but the drones stick up like little pencil erasers.
When uncapped and placed on a paper towel, the varroa mites are revealed! They stand out as dark little parasites on the drone larvae.
